Gaza Strip Crisis Monitoring

Last update: July 2025

The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip has reached catastrophic levels, with famine conditions now unfolding. According to the latest analysis, food consumption across most of the territory has passed the threshold for Famine, and acute malnutrition has reached critical levels in Gaza City. Over 20,000 children have been treated for acute malnutrition since April, including more than 3,000 severe cases. Hunger-related deaths among children under five are rising, with at least 16 reported in the second half of July.

Nearly the entire population—over 2.2 million people—is facing high levels of acute food insecurity. An estimated 470,000 people are experiencing catastrophic conditions, marked by extreme hunger and risk of starvation. Access to essential goods and services, including food, clean water, health care, and shelter, remains extremely limited. Food prices have surged, and households are increasingly relying on high-risk coping strategies, including scavenging and burning waste for cooking. Markets have collapsed, and nutrition supplies are nearly depleted.

The situation is rapidly deteriorating, and large-scale, sustained humanitarian assistance is urgently required to prevent further loss of life. Safe access to food, clean water, and health services is critical to alleviating suffering and addressing the immediate needs of vulnerable populations across Gaza.

IPC ALERT: Worst-case scenario of Famine unfolding in the Gaza Strip

The worst-case scenario of Famine is currently playing out in the Gaza Strip. Conflict and displacement have intensified, and access to food and other essential items and services has plummeted to unprecedented levels. Mounting evidence shows that widespread starvation, malnutrition, and disease are driving a rise in hunger-related deaths. Latest data indicates that Famine thresholds have been reached for food consumption in most of the Gaza Strip and for acute malnutrition in Gaza City. Immediate action must be taken to end the hostilities and allow for unimpeded, large-scale, life-saving humanitarian response. This is the only path to stopping further deaths and catastrophic human suffering.
